The MED-O₂-LA oxygen sensor is a galvanic cell type electrochemical sensor. Oxygen undergoes a reduction reaction at the working electrode and an oxidation reaction at the anode material, releasing charges and forming an electric current. The magnitude of the generated current is proportional to the partial pressure of oxygen and follows Faraday's law. The magnitude of the oxygen partial pressure can be determined by measuring the magnitude of the current.
